Travelling with your pet

Most ardent pet lovers can’t bear the thought of leaving their beloved pets behind for a vacation, and prefer to take them along. But you just can’t expect your dog or cat to hop along and enjoy the ride; trips with pets require planning and a few precautions. Read on to see how traveling with your pet in a car will be an enjoyable experience for everyone.

  • If your pet has never travelled in a car before, try taking it along for short ‘practice’ rides to accustom it to the car. They will get used to the motions and the noises of the car, which will help relieve any anxiety when you actually set forth with your long journey.
  •  If your pet suffers from motion sickness, then it is possible to get medication from a veterinarian. Also, ensure that your pet has up to date vaccinations and is wearing id tags, just incase it escapes.
  • Make sure your pet is secure at all times, either with a harness or within a carrier. Cats and small dogs feel safer in a carrier, which should be secured using a seat belt. Harnesses can be used that attach to regular seat belts.
  • Don’t let your pet hang its head out the window; not only could it jump or fall out if not secured properly, it is actually dangerous for their health! Air borne particles can blow into their eyes and cause injury, and the cold air blasted into their lungs is not healthy!
  • During long car trips, allow the dog to make regular rest and exercise stops (always leash it before opening the car door). Bring along food, water, and treats in a separate container.
  • Don’t leave your pet inside the car unattended, especially if the weather is hot. Cars tend to overheat on hot days very quickly, which can harm your pet.

Travel tips

When packing, remember all medicine you're taking for your asthma, including rescue and controller medicines. Keep your medications in your carry-on bags so they're always with you. It's also a good idea to pack a little extra medication, so you don't run out while you're on the road.
