When aliens attack, monsters fight back – a tagline of one of the most anticipated films of 2009 - Monsters vs. Aliens. Produced by DreamWorks Animation - the creators of Shrek, Madagascar and KungFu Panda, this animation is unique as it is the first film to be directly produced in a 3D format (Tru 3D).
The script was based on a story by Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon, who also directed the movie. The voice casting of the movie is impressive – with extremely talented and well thought-out choices. The main characters are voiced by Reece Witherspoon (Walk the Line), Seth Rogan (Knocked Up), Hugh Laurie (House), Will Arnett (Arrested Development), Rainn Wilson (The Office), Kiefer Sutherland (24), Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report) and Paul Rudd (I Love You, Man).
In a nutshell, the movie begins with Susan’s (Witherspoon) wedding – she is supposed to get married to Derek (Rudd). However, a freak accident prevents this from happening and Susan begins to grow, grow and grow – she reaches about 50 feet! She is quickly whisked away from the public eye by General W.R. Monger (Sutherland), and placed in a military compound. Here she meets other ‘monsters’; The Missing Link (Arnett), the mad scientist-insect Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D (Laurie), the hilarious gelatinous blob, B.O.B. (Rogen)and the 350-foot Insectosaurus (Vernon). Their confinement is cut short, when a mysterious alien Gallaxhar (Wilson) lands on Earth in hopes to conquer the world. The desperate President (Colbert) enlists the help of the Monsters to help defeat the Aliens and save the world.
Despite the story line lacking much depth, the film is extremely watchable. The characters, special effects, action and humour are fantastic. This film is suitable for all ages and should definitely be watched by everyone! Grab the next opportunity to watch the movie and find out ‘Oooze gonna save us?’
