Watchmen, directed by Zack Sydner (previously directed 300 and Dawn of the Dead) is a faithful adaptation of the graphic comic novel written by Alan Moore. Set in the 1940s to 1985, this movie is about costumed crime busters aka Watchmen. As the world is threatened by nuclear destruction, Rorschach, a masked vigilante investigates the murder of The Comedian (his former teammate), and uncovers a plot by a mysterious enemy to kill off other costumed heroes.
This brings the rest of the Watchmen; Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Ozymandias and Doctor Manhattan back into the picture.
So why should you watch the movie?
It is pretty awesome - the strong emotional characters, the powerful visual and sound experiences, the diverse soundtrack and the extraordinary attention to detail is simply… awesome. It is a very dark movie (one would say twisted), and gives you the feeling that you are sitting in a graphic novel. It has a hint of humanity and moments that evoke warm, unexpected laughter.
It is pretty violent. Not the sort of movie you want to take your kids to, despite the fact that there are super cool heroes saving the world. There are no qualms about picking the most gruesome modes of death. With plenty of bone smashing, limb breaking and skull splitting activity, and one too many sex scenes, this movie is definitely not for the fainthearted.
It is pretty long. And definitely worth your time and money! It is almost 3 hours long, but once you start watching it, you wish that it will not end. It captivates you from the first scene to the last and will make you want to watch it again. And again.
The movie has a complex structure; viewers who have read the graphic novel will certainly appreciate all the characters better and will find the movie easier to follow. However, those who cannot get their hands on the novel, will still be mesmerized with this powerful masterpiece.
