Adapted from The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting the Job You Want
Two words that elicit groans and a feeling of doom: job hunt.
Whilst most job sites and books encourage seekers to see the prospect of job hunting as an exciting adventure and challenge, we are far too worried and desperate to see the positive angles of the dreaded hunt. Most job hunters end up with negative attitudes – which sadly, do NOT help out with the chase.
Some of these attitudes are :
‘I have to find a job’
Most of us equate getting the job we want with finding the job we want. We tend to look at it as looking for something we have lost and desperately need, and start the hunt assuming that there are NO jobs at all. Don’t look for a job, try looking for needs of the employers, then create a way to satisfy the needs
‘Somebody, somewhere will recognise what I have to offer’
You may think having a killer resume is all you need to get a job. All you end up doing is writing and sending off your resume to hundreds of job offers – hoping that someone will see your potential eventually. You need a set of pro-active strategies (such as talking to people or physically handing over your resume to companies) to market yourself ACTIVELY rather than passively exhibit yourself.
‘I have nothing special to offer’
Instead of wasting your time wallowing in self-pity, use your hours to discover what special qualities you do offer.
‘If it ain’t broke – don’t fix it’
Most people think that if your present job pays well, not to even dream of looking elsewhere. A desire for change is thought of as restlessness, but change is necessary and imperative; else you are not improving yourself. Never define yourself or your capabilities absolutely – open up to new possibilities and opportunities in life.
‘I must love my job’
Most jobs weren’t made specifically for you – they don’t require a lifetime commitment and you are dispensable. Finding the job you ‘love’ takes time – don’t expect to love your job immediately. For the time being, focus on just liking your job – if not, just find another. Reserve your love for your spouse, family or even your pet!
