Water is the most precious resource on Earth. Sadly, most of us take it for granted since it is abundantly available. Conservation of water is the most cost-effective and environmentally sound way to reduce our demand for water. Here are some practical, every day water-saving strategies for you to consider:
In the bathroomFix your drips. A dripping tap can waste 75 liters of water a day. Fix and maintain your taps (in the sinks and showers) to prevent unwanted leakage. A useful way to check leaks in toilets is by putting food colouring in the toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, then you have a leak. Replace your shower head with a water efficient model such as low-flow showerheads. If you cannot install another showerhead, then try shorten your baths by a minute or two. Also, turn off the water while brushing your teeth, washing your hair or shaving. You will be amazed by how much water you will be saving.
In the kitchen
Wash your fruits and vegetables in a bowl of water instead of running water from the tap. Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, and reuse it for other purposes such as watering houseplants. When washing up, soak pots and pans in water instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean. Try fill up the sink with water and wash everything in one go. If you accidentally drop ice cubes from the freezer, don’t throw them away – just drop them in a house plant instead. Another useful tip is running your washing machine or dishwasher only when they are full.
By doing all of this - you are playing your part to save Earth’s water, as well as saving your own utility bills! Saving water is easy for everyone to do, all you have to do is be more conscious of your actions. Share these tips with friends and neighbours!
