Improving your body language can make a big difference in your people skills, attractiveness and general mood. Of course, there is no specific advice to give on how to use your body language; what you do might be interpreted in various ways depending on who you are talking to (your boss or your partner). Here are some tips to improve your body language.
Don’t cross your arms or legs. This indicates that you are defensive or guarded. Sit up straight and leave your arms or legs open to depict that you are comfortable with your surroundings. Relax your shoulders, but do not slouch.
Nod when they are talking. This shows that you are listening, and are interested. But don’t overdo it; just do it once in a while.
It’s all about leaning. Lean towards the person talking if you want to show that you are interested in what that person is saying. Lean back a bit if you want to show that you are confident in yourself and relaxed. However, DON’T lean in too much during a conversation; that depicts desperation/being needy or looking for approval. Also, don’t lean back too much; that gives the impression that you are arrogant or distant.
Heads up! Don’t keep your eyes on the ground, you may seem insecure and a bit lost. Keep your head up straight and your eyes towards the horizon to exude confidence.
Stop fidgeting. The more you shake your foot, tap your fingers against the table, or touch your face or hair, the more nervous you will seem. Try to relax, slow down and focus your movements. Use your hands more confidently; to describe something or to add weight to a point you are making.
Eye contact. Make eye contact with people you talk to. Giving no eye contact makes you seem insecure. But don’t stare continuously, that might scare the other person off.
Don’t forget to smile! Laugh when someone says something funny, lighten up and seem positive!
